Wind channels up the eastern slope by mid-morning and peaks in afternoon hours. The 30-day average wind of 11 mph masks gusts to 22 mph in spring. Temperatures hover near freezing; avalanche terrain dominates the north and west faces. Morning windows close fast.

Over the last 30 days, Red Rock averaged a NoGo Score of 35.0 with wind holding at 11 mph and temperatures at 36 degrees Fahrenheit. The week ahead shows typical spring volatility: afternoon wind will spike, crowding remains light, but snowpack stability requires backcountry assessment before any approach. Check the SAC avalanche center before travel.

About Red Rock

Red Rock sits at 7,568 feet in the North Sierra, part of a high-altitude cluster east of the primary Sierra crest. Access routes approach from Highway 395 on the east side or via Highway 89 from the Tahoe corridor. The peak is exposed to föhn wind funneling off the high desert and lee-slope loading in winter. The nearest trailheads require 45-minute to 90-minute drives from Susanville or Tahoe City. Parking is limited and unmanaged; arrive before dawn if the road is passable.

Spring conditions at Red Rock are dominated by avalanche terrain and increasing wind. The 365-day maximum temperature reaches 51 degrees Fahrenheit, but 30-day averages sit near 36 degrees, meaning significant snowpack persists into late spring. The 30-day maximum wind speed is 22 mph, with typical afternoon surges. Crowding averages 5 per rolling 30 days, indicating very light use. Early season closure by snow is common; late-season rockfall and sluff increase as the snowpack weakens. Summer brings lower winds and better stability but also afternoon thunderstorms.

Red Rock suits experienced mountaineers with avalanche training and winter-travel skills. Casual hikers should wait until mid to late summer when snow is gone and routes are clear. The peak is best approached in calm morning windows; skip any afternoon push as wind becomes unreliable by noon. Carry beacon, probe, and shovel in spring. Microspikes or crampons are standard through May. The exposed ridge crossings are serious in wind above 15 mph; many parties turn back rather than push exposed terrain in strong conditions.

The North Sierra corridor includes lower-angle touring on nearby ridges and passes that see heavier traffic when Red Rock is out of condition. Lassen Peak (10,457 feet) to the north is a lower-wind alternative in spring. The Tahoe-bound Highway 89 corridor sees more crowded access but offers sheltered valleys and earlier green-up. Red Rock remains a destination for parties seeking isolation and technical challenge; expect to be alone on the peak itself.
