Showers Lake
Campground · Lake Tahoe corridor
Showers Lake is a high-Sierra campground at 8698 feet in the Lake Tahoe corridor, sheltered in a granite basin east of Highway 50. Calmer and less crowded than the open lake to its west.
Wind accelerates in afternoon as thermals climb the basin walls; mornings offer the calmest window. The 30-day average wind of 8 mph masks daily swings from near-flat to 24 mph gusts by mid-day. Expect afternoon closure risk on exposed terrain.
Over the past month, Showers Lake averaged a NoGo score of 14.0 with temperatures near 30 degrees Fahrenheit and wind hovering at 8 mph. The week ahead will show whether that pattern holds or shifts colder and windier. Monitor the 7-day forecast for wind spikes above 15 mph, which often spike crowding as other high-elevation sites become marginal.

About Showers Lake
Showers Lake sits in a sub-alpine bowl on the eastern flank of the Carson Range, roughly 15 miles from South Lake Tahoe via Highway 50 eastbound. The campground occupies a gentle bench at 8698 feet, fed by snowmelt from cirques to the north. Primary access is via US-50 from the Tahoe Basin; Echo Summit (Highway 50 crest) lies west, and Carson Pass (Highway 88) lies southeast. The lake itself is small, shallow, and ice-locked through winter; the basin becomes reliably snow-free by mid-June. Summer and early-fall access is direct; winter closures on Highway 50 cut access entirely.
The site sits high enough to catch afternoon winds funneling off the Sierra crest, but the surrounding ridges provide more shelter than open alpine lake basins. The 30-day average temperature of 30 degrees Fahrenheit reflects late spring conditions; expect 15 to 44 degrees Fahrenheit through the full year. Crowding averages a light 6 out of 10 over 30 days, peaking briefly when Highway 50 opens after winter closure and during summer weekends. Wind is the dominant variable; sustained 8 mph is normal, but gusts to 24 mph occur regularly, especially afternoons.
Showers Lake suits hikers, day-use picnickers, and car campers seeking a quieter Sierra lake without the Tahoe Basin crowds. Fishing is marginal (shallow, cold); swimming is limited to brief warm pockets in late July and August. The site is best for those comfortable with cold nights, afternoon wind, and minimal facilities. Plan campsite setup and water collection for morning hours. Avoid peak summer weekends and the first two weeks after Highway 50 opens, when snow melt makes roads marginal and crowds spike temporarily. Parking fills by 9 a.m. on good-weather weekends.
Nearby Meiss Lake and Round Top Lake offer similar elevation and basin shelter; both require short hikes from Highway 50 or Highway 88 trailheads. Echo Lake (Highway 50, lower elevation) is warmer and slightly more protected but also busier. For sustained calm, the Mokelumne Wilderness basin lakes (southeast via Highway 88) are farther but less windy in afternoon. Showers Lake is the northernmost entry to that chain and the fastest access from the Tahoe Basin proper.
