Whaleback sits in the Bishop Creek watershed, accessed via Highway 395 north of Bishop, California. The standard approach follows Bishop Creek drainage past the dam and into the high lakes basin; the trailhead lies roughly 8 miles from the town of Bishop via Highway 168 and forest roads. The peak stands in avalanche terrain; the north and east faces hold wind slab and wet-slab hazard in spring. ESAC avalanche forecasts apply. Access is car-dependent; parking at trailheads fills on weekends but rarely on weekdays.
